Georgia beats Tennessee in OT

AUTHOR: | IN: Bulldogs | COMMENTS: No Comments

Georgia Bulldogs beat Tennessee Volunteers 57-53 in OT tonight. It was a heck of a game for both teams. Georgia and Tennessee battled it out all night long. Marcus Thornton also played tonight. It was Thornton’s first game back since his injury last month. Marcus Thornton presence helped the Bulldogs beat the Volunteers. Georgia is now 10-8, 1-3 in conference play. Tennessee is 8-10, 1-3 in conference play.

Early in the game, the Bulldogs seemed to have control of the game. Tennessee did make it interesting before halftime. Jeronne Maymon of Tennessee scored 12 points and had 8 rebounds. Gerald Robinson of Georgia scored 16 points with 6 rebounds and had 5 assist. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope had 9 points with 6 rebounds and 1 assist. Georgia didn’t shoot well in the 1st half. Their shooting was 34.9% all night long. Both offenses missed a lot of field goals, it hurt Tennessee the most.

In the 2nd half, Tennessee started to have a shooting rhythm. But still Georgia kept finding ways to reclaim the lead. Thanks to Gerald Robinson, hit all his free throws. That also made a big difference. Both schools could have easily had a big lead and won during regulation. Tennessee scored 7 turnover points, one of the reason that kept the Vols in the game.

In overtime, Georgia scored 11 points. The Bulldogs had a bigger break in OT than they did in the 2nd half. Tennessee didn’t get any turnover points at all. Georgia on the other hand, scored 6 turnover points. Both Donte’ Williams and Nemanja Djurisic scored 4 points in OT. After Gerald Robinson nailed his perfect 4-4 free throws, the Bulldogs defense was stymied and also created a turnover. The game was over when Kentavious Caldwell-Pope hit his 1st free throw to make it 57-53. He was 1 for 2, but it didn’t really matter.

It was a great win for the Bulldogs, they will host Ole Miss this Saturday afternoon. Step 2 to reach the NCAA tournament is keep winning those home games. This was sweet revenge, Georgia lost to Tennessee last year with a last second shot at home on this very same date.

Update: Georgia basketball season

AUTHOR: | IN: Bulldogs | COMMENTS: No Comments

Georgia Bulldogs are 0-3 in conference play this year. Right now, things are not looking good in Athens. Vanderbilt beat Georgia on Saturday 77-66 in Nashville. Georgia also lost to Florida in Gainesville and lost to Alabama in Athens. The Bulldogs will host Tennessee tomorrow night in Athens. This is not what coach Mark Fox wanted at the beginning of the season.

Georgia is also missing their lead scorer, Marcus Thornton. 6-7 Marcus Thornton injured his leg during a game against Furman on December 23. Georgia is looking for its first SEC win tomorrow. Georgia beat Tennessee the last time these two teams met. Georgia is 9-8, 0-3 in conference play; Tennessee is 8-9, 1-2 in conference play. Tennessee is in their 1st season under coach Cuonzo Martin. Coach Mark Fox will try to use Dustin Ware for the perimeter shooting. Georgia has been playing Tennessee in basketball every year since 1951.

Georgia Bulldogs will face Ole Miss on Saturday in Athens. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope has averages 14.5 points per game. He has 246 points, with 86 field goal points this season. He has an average of 41.1 field goals per game. He will be the number 1 guy in tomorrow’s game. Mark Fox will count on Kentavious Caldwell-Pope to score when there’s a chance. Also, Gerald Robinson who leads the team in assists per game will also have a major impact in tomorrow’s game. Gerald Robinson averages 3.4 assist per game and has a 43.8% in field goals. If Gerald Robinson, Dustin Ware, and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope have a big night, Georgia shouldn’t have any problems with Tennessee.

Georgia needs to beat Tennessee Volunteers in order to stay in the NCAA hunt for a tournament berth. That will be step 1 in order to keep themselves from falling any further in the conference.

Georgia gets another RB Commitment

AUTHOR: | IN: Bulldogs | COMMENTS: No Comments

Today Georgia will add another 4 star player in the running game. Todd Gurley from Tarboro, NC decided to be a Bulldog instead of being a Tiger from Clemson. Todd Gurley is 6 ’0”, 215 pounds and he also ran track. He will fit nicely in the running game along with Keith Marshall and Isaiah Crowell. Todd Gurley ran track for Team USA last summer in Europe. Todd Gurley was ranked in the Top 15 running backs in the country this past year.

With Todd Gurley’s commitment, Georgia now has 17 2012 signings. Georgia should be very depth in the running game. So if players like Carlton Thomas and Ken Malcome are injured, they will have Keith Marshall and Todd Gurley to help solidify the running game. It will be also neat if Georgia uses Gurley and Marshall in passing situations such as play action pass or down field plays. I think Mike Bobo will use Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall for reverse plays like Julio Jones does for the Atlanta Falcons. Both players are very fast.

2012 season now looks more exciting than ever on the offense. But Georgia will lose TE Orson Charles to the NFL draft this year. Things will pick up for the Bulldogs. With Aaron Murray at quarterback and hopefully Hutson Mason still the back-up, Georgia will have 2 quarterbacks that can throw deep down the field to their receivers.

Alabama National Champs

AUTHOR: | IN: Bulldogs | COMMENTS: No Comments

Alabama Crimson Tide beat LSU Tigers 21-0. Alabama was ranked number 2 at 11-1, LSU was ranked number 1 at 13-0. This was Alabama’s second BCS Bowl in 3 yrs. Last time Alabama played in the BCS Bowl was in January of 2010, when they beat Texas Longhorns. Alabama has 14 National Championships to their credit.

Alabama and LSU played a good defensive battle throughout the game. One problem, LSU was getting shutout and Alabama was getting points from field goals. Jeremy Shelley kicked a 23 yard field goal in the 1st quarter to give the Crimson Tide a 3-0 lead. In the 2nd quarter, Jeremy Shelley kicked two field goals. A 34 yard field goal to give the Crimson Tide a 6-0 lead early in the 2nd quarter. Then later in the quarter after he missed a field goal; Jeremy Shelley kicked a 41 yard field goal to give Alabama a 9-0 lead.

In the 3rd quarter, Alabama again stops LSU offense. Alabama got 2 more field goals by Jeremy Shelley. He hit a 35 yard field goal to give the Crimson Tide a 12-0 lead. Later after missing another field goal, Jeremy Shelley kicked a 44 yard field goal to increase Alabama’s lead to 15-0.

In the 4th quarter, Alabama finally nailed down the coffin to LSU. Trent Richardson scored a 34 yard touchdown run to make it 21-0 Alabama. Jeremy Shelley missed the extra point. Alabama’s quarterback AJ McCarron was marvelous. He was 23-34, 234 passing yards and no interceptions. LSU’s quarterback Jordan Jefferson had a rather forgettable night. He was 11-17, 53 passing yards and 1 interception.

This game was very similar to the first game that these two teams met in November. LSU beat Alabama in Tuscaloosa 9-6 in OT, last night it was all Alabama. Question now, who is really the number 1 team? LSU lost gave them a 13-1 record, Alabama is 12-1. Who is really the number 1 team in the country? I think most people now want a playoff system after what happened last night.

Georgia loses the SEC opener to Alabama

AUTHOR: | IN: Bulldogs | COMMENTS: No Comments

Georgia Bulldogs lost to Alabama Crimson Tide 74-59 in Athens tonight. Georgia is 9-6,0-1 in conference play. Georgia is without Marcus Thornton, who is the leader in rebounding for Georgia. Georgia didn’t exactly have their game plan intact. Alabama Crimson Tide is 12-3, 1-0 in conference play, had big night from Trevor Lacey. Trevor Lacey who is a freshman, scored 19 points in the game.

Early in the game, both teams swapped leads. Georgia led a few times in the 1st half of the game. Last lead by Georgia was 11-10 when Gerald Robinson punched a 2 pointer just before the shot clock went to zero. Georgia Bulldogs made the game close in the 2nd half, with the score of 52-48. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope led a 2nd half rally on Donte Williams stuff tip of his own miss. Alabama went on a 12-2 run for 4.5 minutes to separate the Bulldogs in anyway of making of a comeback. In fact, the Bulldogs went 5 minutes without scoring in the 2nd half. That made it an easy ride for the Crimson Tide to pickup their first conference win. Tony Mitchell of Alabama scored 17 points and he had his family from Swainsboro,Ga  in the stands. Alabama out rebounded Georgia 35-20. Gerald Robinson of Georgia had 11 points in the game.

Alabama continued their winning streak at 4 games while Georgia got their 5 game winning streak snapped. Georgia had some chances early in the game to take control but they couldn’t. The Bulldogs will face Florida in Gainesville on Tuesday night.

Georgia falls at Tennessee; recruit picks Gamecocks over UGA

A couple of notes from Thursday night:

  • The No. 15 Lady Dogs basketball team found out Thursday that Tennessee’s pretty good down low during the No. 6 Lady Vols’ 80-51 win in Knoxville. Georgia (12-3 overall, 1-1 in SEC) got outscored 42-12 in the paint and was outrebounded 52-32. The Lady Dogs were as close as five points late in the first half before Tennessee (11-3, 2-0) went on a 6-2 run to lead 36-37 at the break. Georgia never got closer than six in the second half, and that was early on. Meredith Mitchell had 14 points for Georgia, which next plays at 2 p.m. Sunday at Auburn.
  • Defensive back Chaz Elder picked South Carolina over Georgia last night during the Under Armour All-America game. And to celebrate, he may take trips to … Vanderbilt and Arkansas?

What to watch for in the Under Armour All-America Game

AUTHOR: | IN: Bulldogs | COMMENTS: No Comments

By Brent Zell

ESPN will broadcast the Under Armour All-America Game at 7:30 p.m. EST tonight and give everyone a good look at three future Dawgs – and possible a fourth.

The three Georgia football commits will be on Team Blur, which is hopefully a reference to speed and not to bouncing off walls. Running back Keith Marshall will wear No. 4, offensive guard John Atkins will wear No. 77, and defensive tackle John Taylor – who has been getting attention in practice – will don No. 55.

Also keep an eye on a player from Team Highlight (seriously, who named these teams, Big 10 officials?).
Safety Chaz Elder, rated No. 7 at his position by ESPN, is going to announce tonight the school he’ll be signing with, and it’s apparently a tight race between UGA and South Carolina for his services. He’ll be wearing No. 15.
