LOGAN GRAY HANGING UP THE RED AND BLACK – WILL TRANSFER!

Logan Gray, Georgia’s Quarterback/Punt Returner turned Wide Receiver/Punt Returner has elected to transfer to another school and will not be playing for the Dawgs next season.  Gray, who will graduate with his undergraduate degree in May, will be eligible to play right away for another school per NCAA rules, as he has one more year of eligibility.  Gray, a native of Columbia, Missouri said, “I plan on playing my last year of football while pursuing my Master’s degree at another school, most likely close to home, where my family can attend all of games.” (source: AJC.com)

Gray did everything he could to help the Bulldawgs during his time in Athens, and he did everything the coaches asked him to do.  He was all about “team.”  Having come to Georgia as a highly touted Quarterback, Logan ended up being on the punt return squad for 2008 and 2009, sitting as the third stringer QB behind Matt Stafford and then a second stringer QB behind Joe Cox.  Finally, with his shot coming up for 2010, it looked certain that he was going to be looked over again in favor of the new kids on the block, Zach Mettenberger and Aaron Murray.  Wanting to do anything he could to get some playing time and help the team, Gray requested CMR to let him play Wide Receiver this last year, which was granted.

Unfortunately for Logan, the coaching staff used him less as a wide receiver this past year than they used him in the quarterback position in 2009, somewhere between none and zilch.  Behind Cox in 2009, Bobo would out of the blue put Gray in for one set of downs, when Cox was stumbling. The Defenses knew it would be a quarterback keeper every time (which of course it was, every time) and they would shut the play down for little or no yardage.  Then Bobo would pull Logan out and put Cox back in, not giving Gray any chance to really get comfortable in the real time game conditions.  In 2010, as a receiver, Logan had a total of 9 catches for 105 yards, which tells you how much he was utilized in that position. The fact is, we will never truly know what kind of player Logan Gray might have been at Georgia, because he flat out wasn’t given the chance.  He might have simply been a mediocre player, which would have warranted the limited play that he actually was given, or had he been given the ball more consistently, both as quarterback and/or Receiver, he might have turned out to be a true “diamond” in the rough.  If you don’t think this staff has been incapable of recognizing talent on the team and where and when to utilize it appropriately, may I remind you that a certain young running back from New Jersey, named Knowshon Moreno, was frickin’ redshirted his freshman year.  I rest my case.

Logan, as a Dawg fan, I wish you only the best and true success in whatever you end up doing with your life in the future.  I hope that your memories of being a Dawg are good ones and that you will not hold a grudge against the University, for which you gave your all, due to your underutilized career.  Hopefully, CMR and staff will use your situation and, since we brought it up, Knowshon’s, to truly work on recognizing what we have at Georgia and using every player to his true potential and beyond.
