|DE Sterling Bailey, at 6-5, 260 lbs, hails from East Hall HS in Gainesville, Georgia, just a hop, skip (not even a jump) from Athens. But, one of the reasons Sterling chose the Dawgs on May 14, 2010 over 24 other schools, is that Athens was far enough from home for him to be on his own, but close enough to come home anytime he wished.
Alike his fellow ‘Dream Team’ playmate OLB Ray Drew, Sterling is a very spiritual young man. “I like being close to home and being around family,” Bailey said. “It’s far enough away from me to be on my own, and also far enough away for me just in case I want to come home and see my family. And then I also love it because of coach Richt. When I talk to him, it’s more than about football.”… “(Richt) talks to me about spiritual things and life and that’s one thing I like about him because he’s a spiritual man,” Bailey said. “That’s what I am myself. I put everything I do in God’s hands, because I know if I put it in my hands, it won’t prosper.”
Sterling also said he not only likes Todd Grantham’s aggressive 3-4 Defensive scheme but also Grantham’s aggressive recruiting. He was very impressed that the Coach came and visited him three days after Mark Richt gave him the job as the new Defensive Coordinator at Georgia. “The staff from last year they, sometimes the coach would come out there, and other times he wouldn’t,” Bailey said. “But, the staff this year, what I like about them is that when they want something, they go get it. They are persistent about it when recruiting. That’s what I like about it, because they don’t stop. When somebody tells them, when I’m looking here, they say, ‘we’re still going to come after you, because we see you as one of the top players in the state.’ They’re persistent about it.” (source: scout with foxsports.com)
It speaks volumes when a kid appreciates relentless recruiting by a coaching staff, making him feel ‘super wanted.’ Once again, we have to give kudos to CMR for he and his staff’s recruiting efforts this year. I would say “You have to give the Devil his due,” but that doesn’t exactly square with the ‘spiritualism’ that a lot of this recruiting class appreciated in Richt. Additionally, I don’t care to be struck down by lightning at my young age!
Yup, Richt got a good one early. Welcome aboard the Dawg Train, Sterling Bailey! May the force be with you!
