Georgia Football: Wednesday Practice Report

UGA-vs-LSU0006The sixth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs moved a day closer to concluding preparations for their upcoming Southeastern Conference road tilt with Tennessee.

The Bulldogs (3-1, 2-0 SEC) worked out in jerseys, shoulder pads and shorts for 90 minutes and then removed the shoulder pads for the final 30 minutes.

“The effort was outstanding today and overall we had good focus,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said. “Our scout team did their part especially on special teams.”

Richt provided the same update as the past few days on sophomore tailback Todd Gurley, indicating he is day-to-day with an ankle injury. Gurley did not practice with the team Wednesday but instead tried to do get a little work indoors. Freshmen tailbacks J.J. Green and Brendan Douglas received a majority of action during the competition period of practice. Richt said this is normal as Gurley and sophomore Keith Marshall get their fair amount in games.

“Keith is very capable of carrying it as many times as we need him too,” Richt added. “You get a lot more rest in the game now with the television timeouts. He could carry it 15-20-25 times.”

In last Saturday’s thrilling win over sixth-ranked LSU, Gurley went down early in the second quarter with the ankle injury and did not return. Marshall tallied 96 yards on a career-high 20 carries.

After surrendering six sacks in the first two games, the Bulldog offensive line has not allowed any in the past two contests. Still, Richt said there is work to be done in all areas for the team.

“I told our offensive line and the whole team, we’re not that good – we have to be focused and be on our game and be prepared,” Richt said. “We don’t have a lot of margin for error. We have to do it every week. I don’t want them to think we have arrived.”

Kickoff in Knoxville is schedule for 3:30 p.m. ET Saturday, and the game will be televised by CBS.
