Number 5 – a tie, John Dewberry and the Tech Band

After the 1981 season, John Dewberry left the Georgia football team over lack of playing opportunities and transferred to Georgia Tech. Dewberry was eventually successful on the field and defeated Georgia in two straight games. Georgia fans grudgingly accept that Dewberry got the best of the Dogs.

However, what no Bulldog will accept is the Tech tradition Dewberry initiated: vandalizing the Hedges after a Tech football win in Athens. Tech football players proudly keep the distasteful practice alive when the opportunity arises, which is rare. (There are quite a few Bulldog fans unaware of the tradition, because, like, how often do they see it?)

The Tech Band

During halftime of the 1992 Georgia-Georgia Tech contest, the Tech Band covered Sanford Stadium’s 100th Year Anniversary of Georgia Football on field logo  with the sacrilegious GT. The result was a near riot. Georgia fans have booed the Tech Band at every opportunity since, including Tech Homecoming parades.

It’s a shame, really, since few current Tech Band members were alive when the instigating event occurred. On the other hand, many Georgia fans have secretly professed appreciation for the event as they always wanted to boo the Tech band, but refrained for the sake of civility. Of course, revenge trumps civility, especially where clean old fashion hate is concerned.

Dawn of the Dawg knows that with so many reasons to hate Tech, each Bulldog’s reasons are individual, personal, and very much a matter of generation.

We did our best.

What is your favorite reason for hating Tech?

Do you have a favorite Bee killer?

I know, so little time . . . .
