Georgia Football made national headlines earlier this month, but this time it wasn’t an arrest, suspension or dismissal of a player. It was because wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell joined an all-female book club.
Mitchell’s story was featured on USA Today, Fox News, and Yahoo.com
Picking up a stack of new books seems like a no-brainer since he has had some free time recently while rehabbing knee injuries including ACL surgery after last year’s season opener vs Clemson and arthroscopic surgery just a few weeks ago.
Mitchell discovered the book club while at a bookstore. He struck up a conversation with one of the members, Kathy Rackley, to ask for reading recommendations. She mentioned that she recently joined a book club, and the rest is Bulldog lore.
“It’s funny because the first meeting I went to, they all asked how old my mom was,” said Mitchell. “My mom is going to hate me for saying this, but she’s 42. And everyone in the book club is older than my mom. Everyone. Some of them are older than my grandmother. I’ve been adopted into their family.”
Perhaps Georgia wide receivers are just looking to one-up each other in their off-the-field hobbies? Chris Conley garnered plenty of attention earlier this summer with his Star Wars fan film.
We hope to see Mitchell back between the hedges soon, but in the meantime, we expect a full report on the books he has picked since joining the club. As for his new friends?
“All the ladies in the club are great people and good friends, so the relationships are great and I cherish them,” said Mitchell.
As a bibliophile myself, I love that he has found a new interest. And isn’t college all about broadening your horizons? What book recommendations would you have for Mitchell?
