September 23, 1978: Georgia Plays Spoiler

This is a prime example of this game playing a role in what happens at the end of the season for one or both of the teams.

In the second game of the 1978 season, Clemson came to Athens ranked No. 8 in the nation, while Georgia was unranked. The Dawgs went on to shut out Clemson 12-0, and while it was Clemson’s only loss, the Tigers were sent to the Gator Bowl and did not get a major bowl because of the outcome of the Georgia game.

Nothing like being the fly in the ointment when it comes to Clemson.
