Georgia’s Todd Gurley, Amarlo Herrera named SEC Players of the Week

The praise keeps rolling in for the Georgia Bulldogs after their opening week win over the Clemson Tigers, only this time it’s not only about Todd Gurley, but also on the defensive side of the ball and linebacker Amarlo Herrera.

More from Georgia Football

Gurley has been named SEC Co-Offensive Player of the Week along with Texas A&M quarterback Kenny Hill, and Herrera was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week.

Herrera posted his ninth career game with 10-plus tackles after recording a career-high 12 stops. Those stats includ two sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss. The Tigers were held scoreless (and to just 15 yards of offense) in the second half by Herrera and the Dawgs defense.

For all the writers and voters who left Herrera off of the preseason watch lists (which teammates Jordan Jenkins, Ramik Wilson and Leonard Floyd all seemed to make), this is serving notice to what we’ve been saying all along – watch Amarlo Herrera.

Gurley’s career day has been well-documented, but we’ll just refresh your memory a bit.

The Heisman candidate rushed for a career high 198 yards, along with three rushing touchdowns, and also had a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, giving him a school record 293 all-purpose yards. The previous record, set by Rodney Hampton in 1987, was 290 yards.

Congrats to both Gurley and Herrera, and here’s to plenty more of these awards during the season.
