No rookie-watching of former Georgia Bulldogs in NFL Week 1

If you thought you might get to spend the first week of the 2014 NFL season watching some former Georgia Bulldogs play their rookies season, you’ll probably be disappointed.

More from Georgia Football

Only two former Dawgs who are rookies this season made the active rosters of their respective teams. Aaron Murray, who is listed third on the depth chart at quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, and Arthur Lynch who despite making the cut for the Miami Dolphins, is on their injured reserve.

Defensive tackle Garrison Smith is also a member of the Dolphins, but to this point is only on their practice squad. As well as he played in the preseason, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him get moved to the Dolphins active roster before too long.

Wide receiver Rantavious Wooten and offensive lineman Chris Burnette were both cut by the teams that had signed them, and are currently free agents. Both played well but are at positions where the depth for the teams who signed them were high. Burnette in particular will probably be signed to a practice squad before long.

The chances of Murray getting into the game, even for a little mop-up time, are slim to none. As 3rd string, he’ll be carrying a clipboard and helping coaches send in plays at the very most – barring injuries to the first two QBs on the depth chart of course.

So for now, Bulldog fans will have to relish the sight of A.J. Green hauling in passes, and Matthew Stafford slinging the ball to the guy from Georgia Tech….what’s his name? Mega-something or other.
