Georgia Swimming: 12 Bulldogs make U.S. National Team

USA Swimming announced its roster for the 2014-15 National Team last week and Georgia swimming was well represented, with 12 current and former Bulldogs among the 103 roster spots.

The swimmers had to be in the top six in combined results for each Olympic event from the 2014 Phillips 66 USA Swimming National Championships (held August 6-10 in Irvine, Ca.) and the 2014 Pan Pacific Championships (held August 21-25 in Australia and Hawaii).

Current Bulldogs on the team include:

Gunnar Bentz, 400 individual medley
Nicolas Fink, 100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke
Hali Flickinger, 200 butterfly, 400 individual medley
Chase Kalisz, 200 butterfly, 200 individual medley, 400 individual medley
Jay Litherland, 400 individual medley
Maddie Locus, 50 freestyle
Olivia Smoliga, 100 backstroke
Courtney Weaver, 200 butterfly

Former Bulldogs on the squad are:

Andrew Gemmell, 1500 freestyle, open water 10K
Melanie Margalis, 200 breaststroke, 200 individual medley, 400 individual medley
Allison Schmitt, 200 freestyle
Shannon Vreeland, 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle

"“The USA Swimming National Team represents the pinnacle of competitive swimming in the United States,” said Frank Busch, USA Swimming National Team Director. “This group of dedicated and talented athletes will positively represent our country and continue to build on our tremendous legacy of success in and out of the pool.”"

Gemmell recently won the 10k Pan Pacifics Championship in Hawaii after the long-distance races were relocated from the original location in Australia due to water quality issues. Kalisz holds the American, U.S. Open, NCAA, NCAA Championships and school records in the 400 individual medley, and is the two-time defending NCAA champion in the 400 individual medley. Litherland, Bentz and Weaver will start their UGA careers this fall.
