Mark Richt: Georgia vs. South Carolina ‘could get a little bloody’

It’s not often that you hear Georgia head coach Mark Richt offering up anything in the way of a prediction or even slight hint at how he thinks a ball game will unfold.

Apparently this week’s game against South Carolina has him feeling like a real donnybrook is brewing in this yearly border war.

Check out what coach Richt told the Macon Telegraph:

"“I’ve got a feeling this game could get a little bloody. I think both teams are tough, physically, and I think both teams have got outstanding backs that can pound. I know both teams know how to throw and catch, I think history has proven that, but before it’s over it may get down to a little bit of a fistfight.”"

More than likely, Richt isn’t actually referring to tussles and chippy behavior on the field (although that’s always a possibility with the Gamecocks), but it does shed a little light on how tough he feels this game will be.

The two teams have been built similarly for years, and both took parallel paths during the offseason.

Coming into 2014, both teams have backs that could be considered Heisman candidates (although Georgia’s Todd Gurley probably a bit more than Carolina’s Mike Davis), and both teams are starting new quarterbacks following the exit of their longtime and record-setting starters.

Richt also commented on the possibility that Georgia might attack South Carolina’s suspect pass defense, given the way it was dissected by Texas A&M and even East Carolina to a degree, and if this would be an aerial show with two secondarys that are both looked at as possible targets.

"“I know coach (Spurrier) really likes to have a balance in those numbers, but if you need to finish the game like they did by running the ball, and you’re able to, it’s a pretty exciting thing for coaches. I don’t know how the fans like it, but I know coaches love to be able to end a game like that.”"

With Georgia’s shortage of wide receivers, and surplus of running backs, the ground attack will probably be what we see from both sides.
