Georgia Bulldogs, Mark Richt nearly unbeatable at home vs. non-conference

When a game approaches like this week’s Georgia Bulldogs meeting with the Troy Trojans where this is no real history between the two teams (they’ve only met once before), you start to look for things worth pointing to as a barometer for the game.

But none of it applied when it came to looking at Georgia vs. Troy.

But what about on a broader spectrum?

What does history say about the Georgia Bulldogs playing against non-conference teams during the regular season under head coach Mark Richt?

I knew the record would be good. I just had no idea how good. Even I was shocked a little.

First — because it’s probably the most stunning stat of all — since 2001 when Mark Richt took over as head coach, Georgia has only lost one non-conference regular season game between the hedges at Sanford Stadium – and that’s in 31 total home games.

    One. Uno. Singular.

Sadly, that one loss was to the team that the Bulldog Nation probably hates to lose to at home more than anyone, a 45-42 loss to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in 2008, Paul Johnson’s first year as head coach and the only time he’s managed to get the best of Richt and the Dawgs.

On the whole, Georgia is 41-5 in non-conference regular season games under Richt. The five losses – Georgia Tech, Oklahoma State, Colorado, Boise State and Clemson. No losses to FCS opponents (and lets not invite North Dakota State to Athens anytime soon).

Of those 41 wins, 24 of them were by 20 or more points.

    That’s a lot of beatdowns.

And 30 of those wins came at Sanford Stadium.

So, the odds of Troy walking out of Athens with a tick mark in the win column? Pretty darn slim.

Just a little food for thought.
