Once again, Todd Gurley’s performance has people around the country sitting up and taking notice, as the Georgia tailback was named the Athlon Sports National Player of the Week for his game against the Tennessee Volunteers.

More from Georgia Football

Gurley rushed for a career-high 208 yards on 28 carries with two touchdowns in a 35-32 win over the Vols to earn the honor. His 51-yard touchdown run in the fourth and 4-yard run on 4th down as time was ticking down were huge parts of the Georgia win.

Gurley could have a future on the UGA track team running the hurdles as well.

“Earlier in the year, I said he is at least one of the best players in the country,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said. “Now, I’m saying he’s the best player in America. I can’t imagine anyone being more talented, a guy who loves his team more, and a guy who means more to his team than he does to us.”

The junior tailback will probably get more attention from this performance, and certainly boosted his chances in the Heisman Trophy race, which appears to be a close call at the top between Gurley and Oregon Ducks quarterback Marcus Mariota.

Gurley and the Bulldogs will take on the SEC-winless Vanderbilt Commodores at Sanford Stadium next Saturday.
