In a secondary already thin with personnel, the last thing the Georgia Bulldogs needed was to lose yet another defensive back.

But the Dawgs got exactly that. Shortly after practice on Monday, head coach Mark Richt held a meeting with the team to announce that cornerback Sheldon Dawson was no longer a member of the team, per a report from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Coach Richt would not comment or elaborate further on why Dawson was gone.

Dawson was a backup DB who had not started this season and had three tackles. The junior saw action against Tennessee this week when starter Damian Swann had to come out for treatment.

In the grand scheme, the loss of Dawson isn’t a big blow – that is unless one of the starters becomes injured for any extended amount of time. As shorthanded as this secondary is, the loss of Dawson could potentially become significant.

Dawson was one of two players suspended for last year’s Gator Bowl loss to the Nebraska Cornhuskers, along with dismissed safety Josh Harvey-Clemons. It’s not known if this previous suspension played into Dawson’s departure from the team.

Georgia is about to take on the Vanderbilt Commodores at Sanford Stadium, before leaving the confines of the hedges until the second week of November.
