Greg McGarity and UGA are putting their money where their mouth is concerning the current Georgia Football program. It was announced this week that the Georgia Athletic Board would spend $1 million to finance the “pre-construction and design phase” of a project in Sanford Stadium that would include erecting a new home locker room and a recruiting area.

UGA athletic director had this to say about the project according to Dawg Nation,

“It is part of a master plan exercise that has been ongoing for years. Now we want to take the next step to move forward with the planning.”

The new locker room and recruiting area will be a welcome addition to Sanford Stadium and will be located behind the east end zone (the one by Sanford Bridge and below the scoreboard).

The Bulldogs (strangely) haven’t actually had a locker room in the stadium before. The players dressed in full uniform in the main football locker room at the Butts-Mehre Building less than a mile away from the stadium before arriving pre-game.

The restrooms and concession stands in the west end of Sanford Stadium will also be updated as a part of this renovation plan. The plan, itself, has no timetable as of now.

This $1 million investment is only a small piece from the $9.2 million for improvements for various athletic facilities on the University of Georgia campus.

This monetary investment may seem unimportant, but it could prove to pay dividends down the road. It can’t hurt recruiting, and it certainly will make the players feel more at home.

Greg McGarity and the Georgia Athletic Board are making a statement of how important athletic excellence is to them. And football success is a significant factor as well.
