The addition of J.R. Reed is big for two reasons.

Kirby Smart has to feel better about his corner position than he did not long before. On Thursday, former Tulsa defensive back J.R. Reed announced he would be transferring to the University of Georgia.

This was big news especially as Georgia had just lost another defensive back in Chad Clay to dismissal from the team. The 6-2, 175 pound Reed, who hails from Plano, Texas, played in all 13 games last year for the Golden Hurricane and registered 5 tackles.

While Reed will add needed depth to the Georgia secondary, a person has to believe Georgia might have had an additional motive in signing him. After all, he is the cousin of 2017 5-star cornerback DeAngelo Gibbs.

Gibbs is a guy that the UGA coaches are desperate to get. The 6-2, 205 pound Loganville, Ga., native is rated as the No. 2 corner in the entire country according to ESPN.com. He’s not only supremely talented, but a big time prospect that Smart doesn’t want to allow to escape the state of Georgia.

And talented he is. Gibbs is labeled by many recruiting services as just an athlete because of his versatility. He could definitely play receiver on the next level, but Kirby Smart wants to employ him in the secondary in his self-proclaimed quest to fill the secondary with some of the best athletes in the country.

As you can see, Reed’s addition to UGA’s defensive back corps not only adds depth to the unit, but his signing gives Georgia a better chance to land his blue-chip cousin DeAngelo Gibbs. Hopefully, UGA does just that.
