Georgia Basketball continued their good work on the recruiting trail under Tom Crean with the commitment of highly regarded Jaykwon Walton.

It’s been a while since I’ve written anything about the Georgia Basketball program. That’s because with the football season just days away, it’s safe to say I’ve been somewhat focused on the gridiron. However, Tom Crean continues to impress as the new head coach of the UGA basketball program. Yesterday he secured a very exciting commitment for the 2019 class.

Jaykwon Walton is a 6ft6 guard out of Mongomery Alabama. A top 60 ranked player, Walton is a long player who can shoot really well for his size. He’s been flying up the rankings since playing really well in summer league play and is exactly what Crean is looking for. He’s very capable of playing guard at the next level despite his size and his shot should continue to improve. In short, he’s a high upside player and the highest ranked player Crean has brought in since he arrived in Athens.

The evening looked like it was going to be even better for the Dawgs when it looked like they were going to get a second commitment. Kyle Sturdivant is another top 100 ranked guard according to rivals.com and he committed to UGA not long after Walton. However, as of this morning, UGAsports.com is reporting that he is reconsidering his decision. So we don’t really know what’s going on with that one.

Either way, it was a good evening for Crean and the UGA basketball program. Hopefully, they can convince Sturdivant to jump on board as well. If they can, then the Dawgs will have a couple of really solid guards joining the program next season.

Next. Why losing Zamir White matters. dark

Crean continues to impress since arriving in Athens. He worked really hard to find some last minute additions to the 2018 class after he arrives. He has also built a strong social media presence and seems to be everywhere trying to promote the UGA Basketball team in a very football dominated environment. If he can put together a solid team this season, he has a chance to really get fans attention and hopefully build the program he envisions.
