Georgia football gained another commitment to the 2021 recruiting class on Thursday. Florida’s Lovasea Carroll chose the Bulldogs over Auburn and South Carolina.

“Running Back U” might have gained another student on Thursday, March 9. Lovasea Carroll, currently the No. 8 running back in the nation and the No. 17 player in the state of Florida committed to Georgia football.

Carroll is the sixth commitment in Georgia’s 2021 recruiting class and the fifth commit since January. Georgia’s class jumps from No. 12 in the nation to No. 8 despite having only a half dozen players.

Who is Lovasea Carroll

Some words to describe Lovasea Carroll as a football player: fast, slippery and deceptively strong. 6-0, 189 lbs. doesn’t sound impressive for a running back, especially one committing to a top tier SEC school, but Carroll plays bigger than he looks.

He seldom goes down the first time he’s hit and seems to just slip out of defenders’ grasps. That’s because Carroll runs with a lot of momentum and his feet are always moving. That persistent running style gives Carroll a solid spin move and makes defenders fall off of him in the open field. His feet don’t stop moving, even when’s wrapped up he’s able to carry defenders an extra few yards because he just doesn’t stop moving.

When Carroll gets in the open field, just go ahead and put six points on the scoreboard. He is so fast, not many players are going to catch him without a good angle.

On one play last season, Carroll had a 60-yard touchdown run right up the middle. From the hand-off five yards in the backfield to the goal line, Carroll covered 65 yards in 7.7 seconds. That’s fast, that is a speed that translates to any level of football. He made big plays on a regular basis last season because of those aforementioned traits and he played against tough competition at IMG Academy.

Carroll is not a finished product, there’s still a lot he needs to work on, which is why he’s only ranked No. 122 in the nation according to the 247Sports Composite. He needs to work on lowering his pad level, some scouts are questioning whether his speed in the backfield can translate against great FBS defenses, especially those with speed. Carroll also needs to bulk up about 20 lbs.

But those positives in his game are things every coach looks for. His speed is natural, he’ll maintain that burst even when he gains size. As long as he doesn’t change his running style, he’ll always be a tough player to bring down. Those issues about pad level and getting to the edge quicker, those aren’t difficult to adjust.

Lovasea Carroll is a player Georgia football is going to want to hold on to. The Bulldogs’ aren’t aching at the running back position, there’s plenty of depth for the foreseeable future and Carroll doesn’t need to stun the SEC immediately. He’ll have time to develop.
