Winning a National Championship is the ultimate goal for Georgia football every season. That has especially been the case under Kirby Smart, who turned the program around the second he stepped foot on campus.
Georgia has fallen short of this goal two years in a row after winning back to back national titles, but that isn't stopping the team or fanbase from wanting to get back on top of the college football world this season.
Winning a championship is easier said than done, and there are countless things Georgia will have to do to accomplish that this year. But there are two reasons why this year's team will be able to compete for a national title, even though the rest of the country doesn't think that is possible.
Highest blue-chip ratio of Kirby Smart's career
What is the blue-chip ratio? First of all, a blue chip recruit is any recruit that was a four or five-star player out of high school. So these blue-chip recruits are the best of the best in their recruiting class, so it goes without saying that the more blue-chip recruits Georgia has the better their chances are at winning a national title.
So Georgia's blue-chip ratio is the percentage of players on their team were either a four or five-star recruit coming out of high school.
Typically only teams with at least a 50 percent blue-chip ratio have a chance to win a National Championship. From Georgia's perspective, that means they are one of the teams that can win it all every season because their blue-chip ratio is one of the best in the country each season. This year however is Georgia's best blue-chip ratio since Smart took over as head coach.
One of the biggest question marks surrounding this team heading into the 2025 season is how they will be able to replace all the talent lost to the NFL this year. People are also wondering how they will handle having to start a new quarterback as well. So the reason why those questions won't prevent Georgia for competing for a National Championship is because they have more talent on paper than they have ever had under Smart.
Improved team chemistry
While Georgia has a lot of talent on their roster this season, none of that matters if the team doesn't learn to come together and play for each other. Some key members of last year's team have come out and said that the team's chemistry was not as great as it had been in year's past, so that could be one of the biggest reasons why Georgia didn't come close to winning a national title last season.
One example of this is what transpired after Carson Beck was injured in the SEC Championship game. In the weeks after this game and before their College Football Playoff quarterfinal matchup against Notre Dame, Beck was focused on visiting and doctors and coming up with a recovery plan for his injury. There obviusly is nothing wrong with that, but Beck didn't return to the team until a few days before their matchup with Notre Dame.
On top of that, reports surfaced that he didn't offer much help to Gunner Stockton, who was making his first career start, or the entire offense in general.
Georgia fans won't know if team chemistry is improving this offseason or not, but it's hard to imagine it getting any worse than it was last year. But if UGA wants to compete for a National Championship this season, they have no choice but to improve their overall team chemistry.
