Speaking of Low…

Recently, Low compiled unit rankings for the entire conference and I thought Georgia finished in some surprising places on his lists:
- Special Teams (1st) — This ranking was never in doubt and isn’t a surprise considering Drew Butler, Blair Walsh, and Brandon Boykin all had great seasons in 2009.
- DB (7th) – I’m actually pleasantly surprised by this ranking, which has to be based mostly on potential. For a group that finished in the bottom third of pass defense in 2009 and replaces 3 starters, a middle of the pack ranking is generous.
- LB (2nd) – This one is all about the new 3-4 scheme. Justin Houston and Cornelius Washington join Akeem Dent, Darryl Gamble, Marcus Dowtin, and Christian Robinson to form one of the most talented linebacker groups in the league.
- DL (8th) – The scheme giveth and it taketh away…still, I feel that this too low for the defensive line. Yes, we must replace 3 NFL DTs, but only one DT can play at a time in the new scheme. Meanwhile, Demarcus Dobbs has played well for the last couple years.
- OL (3rd) – I guess I got caught up in reading all the other press clippings about the UGA offensive line. We return the most starts in the conference on the offensive line, return every starter, and get 2 guys that can help back from injury. Yet, Low still ranks Florida and Alabama ahead of us. I just don’t see it.
- WR/TE (2nd) – I’m a little worried this ranking overestimates our receivers. Of course, if AJ Green can stay healthy for the entire season then we might have the best unit in the conference. The only problem being, in two years, Green has yet to remain healthy.
- RB (2nd) – This ranking is just right. Washaun Ealey and Caleb King are an awesome duo, but they don’t compare to Mark Ingram and Trent Richardson. Not right now, at least.
