GET THE “PUCK” OUTA HERE~!
By Editorial Staff
A couple of days ago I get an e-mail from the President of our local BullDawg Club, which enclosed the below information about UGA Hockey. My initial reaction was “Get the “puck” outa here, when the hell did we get a hockey team, and why?” We’ve gotten to the point where we can’t even play football, much less some sport that should only be played by “Yankees!”
Well, this is my week for feeling real dumb. It turns out that we have had a hockey team at UGA since 1987. The team nick name is – – – – -uh, let me guess, “Ice Dogs”, and it was founded by Larry Hall and a group of students wanting to start a new tradition at the University of Georgia. Apparently they have been fairly successful the last decade, as they play rival teams Georgia Tech, Clemson, et al. (source: ugahockey.com)
UGA hockey has participated in ACHA post season tournament play in 8 of the last 11 seasons, including a trip to the national championship game in 2004 in Phoenix, AZ. The Ice Dogs have won the coveted Thrasher Cup tournament held in Savannah, GA, five times, won three season conference titles, one conference championship (2004) and played in five conference championship games, including the first ever SEC hockey conference championship game versus Tennessee in 2009. So, “slap shot” that, you “hockey puck!” (source: ugahockey.com)
Apparently, I was all wrong yesterday when I suggested that Mark Richt seek advice on winning games from the other Mark (Mark Fox of the Hoop Dawgs). He should put on his long johns and parka and go see Coach John Hoos at the Ice Dog’s home arena, the Atlanta Ice Forum in Duluth, GA, which is also home to the NHL Atlanta Thrashers and ECHL Gwinnett Gladiators. Hoos is in his 12th season as head coach for the frozen dawgies, and the above honors and stats are a testament to his ability as a head coach. (source: ugahockey.com)
If you are anywhere near the Columbus, Georgia venue and are a hockey fan, below is information on the upcoming tournament this weekend. But remember, we have big bad State Troopers on the freeways looking to give tickets because our State is broke, so don’t get caught “icing!”
PLEASE COACH RICHT, GO TALK TO JOHN, A.S.A.P. BEFORE THE TECH GAME! LUV AND PUPPY KISSES, DAWGMAN1973.
Final thoughts about our defense in Saturday’s game against Auburn. If our defense was playing ice hockey instead of football after the first quarter, the following video is a pretty accurate depiction of what they would have looked like:
