SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO??????????????????

Colorado wants him.  Now, Miami wants him.  Dawg fans are calling for him to be axed.  However, Mark Richt says he is staying put; that he will be the head football coach in 2011; and that he wants to retire from football as the UGA head coach.  To quote him exactly, Richt said “I have the same answer for that as I had for the other one (referring to questions about the Miami and Colorado jobs): Georgia’s my home, and it’s where I wanna finish my career.” (source Macon.Com)

What does this mean?  Is what he is saying about the same as what Nick Saban said while he was the coach of the Dolphins regarding the Alabama job, and then the next thing you knew he jumped ship?  Nope, I don’t think so.  Knowing Richt for his honestly and faith, I do not think he would lie about it.  His statements when asked about this subject are very clear and concise, not some of the vague half-truths that a lot of coaches have given in order that they have some wiggle room to change their minds and make the move from where they are currently coaching.

The funny thing is from every story, editorial, and blog I have read regarding the subject of whether he is going to go elsewhere, nobody has surmised what I see in Mark Richt’s words.  As a lawyer, you are trained to “see the forest for the trees” and not the opposite.  CMR’s words have absolutely no hidden meaning; they are very simplistic statements of fact.  What the man is simply saying is that if he cannot turn the situation around at Georgia next year and is either fired or asked to resign, that that will be the end of his coaching career, i.e. “Georgia’s my home, and its where I wanna finish my career.”  He is telling folks the truth about his plans and everybody is so busy looking for some hidden meaning that they do not hear him.

Coach Richt has made between 2-3 million dollars (including bonuses, incentives, advertising contracts etc.) every year of the 10 years he has been at Georgia.  He doesn’t come across as some spend thrift that has blown all his money.  To the contrary, I would assume that from everything I have read that he is rather conservative.  So, bottom line is he probably has enough money put away that he doesn’t need another coaching gig, especially if coaching is not what makes his heart beat when he awakes in the morning.  And, I will tell you it is not.  I am sure that CMR has enjoyed coaching, although not so much these last two years, but the only thing he really cares about and what is important to him is his family and faith, which of course is an honorable attribute.

It has been well publicized that he has a special needs child, adopted children, and his wife is a cancer survivor.  So, I think what he is really saying is Georgia is my family’s home.  This is where they call home.  This is where my children’s schools and friends are.  This is where my wife’s doctors are if she needs them.  If I cannot make it at the school that gave me my break to be a head football coach, I am just going to call it quits and be with my family who need me.  I am not going to uproot and drag them hither and fro every time I get a better offer or, in the alternative, am politely asked to leave a school.

If you recall, when Mark Richt was first introduced as Georgia’s new coach 10 years ago, he stated that Georgia was now his home, and he will stay as long as “they will have me.”  Sometimes, all you have to do is completely clear your mind and “listen” to what someone is saying to know the truth.  It’s really not that hard.

GEORGIA WILL BE THE LAST SCHOOL AT WHICH MARK RICHT COACHES!
