MARK RICHT: IF THE WHEEL AIN’T BROKE DON’T TRY TO FIX IT!
By Editorial Staff
Most commentary from the news and blog sites that are in support of giving Mark Richt another year to try get things straightened out include an addendum that he make the changes necessary to do so, including necessary staff changes. Well it looks like Mark is thumbing his nose even at these supporters.
At a press conference, reported on Monday, Richt responded to the question of whether he was considering any staff changes by simply saying “No!” When asked if Mike Bobo would be doing the offensive play calling going forward, Richt simply said “Yes!” (source: Macon.Com – Seth Emerson) So there you have it folks. Since CMR has flat out stated that he is making no staff changes it appears that we will be “status quo” for next year.
The question is whether or not Coach Richt honestly believes that “The Wheel Ain’t Broke,” in which case I would like to have some of what he is smoking, ’cause this dude is flying higher than a kite. Or, is he just that arrogant in thinking none of his coaching or staff decisions could possibly be the problem? UNBELIEVABLE, should be your response whichever the case.
The bottom line is, if he does not make some significant staff adjustments, then a) he should not be given the opportunity to have another year at the helm; and b) we will have the same result next year as we had this one, if not worse, because we will be minus A.J. and Houston. All of this simply substantiates what my problem has been with Mark Richt all along, and that is that he does not have what it takes to make the hard and harsh decisions that a head football coach has to and should make. Even if that means firing an assistant after one year, irrespective of whether the guy has ten children or not. All you have to do is look at what Bobby Bowden told Vince Dooley when Vince called him to discuss the possibility of offering UGA’s head coaching job to Richt. He said, in essence, the guy is so nice that he may not have what it takes to be a head coach. And that pretty much sums it up!
In a perfect world, Mark Richt would stay at Georgia and coach another 25 years, and as part of that, change the way he handles things or actually change what he has not been handling. In other words, BE A HEAD COACH; AND ACT LIKE ONE. But alas, this certainly is not a perfect world; you cannot make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear; and, CMR, I hate to break it to you dude, but THE WHEEL IS BROKE!
