It was probably best that I did not write a blog immediately following the end of the Liberty Bowl, as it would have been overflowing with expletives and would have gone on and on and on , as if this blogger was suffering from verbal diarrhea. Further, nobody would have wanted to read it.
Cooling time and a more proper perception of what took place in that game now allows me to make this the most concise blog I have written to date. The following is my assessment of what led to the final humiliation of this Georgia football team.
Coach Mark Richt lost this game for the Dawg Nation in the first quarter, when we had the ball at the UCF two yard line, with only inches to make a first down. With the score 0-0 he opted to kick a field goal instead of going for the first down and/or touchdown. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know what message that this sent to his team. The message was, “I don’t think you have what it takes to make a 6 inch first down,” and we need to take points when we can get them. It totally deflated this team mentally, and the offense played flat the entire game thereafter. Of course, it was the one time that the Defense played half decent.
From a strategic standpoint it was a ‘stupid’ call. The odds were heavy in our favor to make the first down, if not the touchdown. A quarterback sneak, with Murray just falling forward, with his frame, would have easily made the first down. However, worst case scenario is that we do not make it, and we have UCF backed up on their two yard line. Our ‘D’ had already been able to stop their offense on their first possession, so odds would have been that we would have gotten the ball back in great field position.
This game, where our 6-6 SEC team was embarrassed by a lower tier team, by keeping us from getting into the end zone the entire game, simply encapsulated what has happened the entire season. Piss poor coaching! What do you think?
