GOT TO KNOW WHEN TO HOLD’EM, KNOW WHEN TO FOLD’EM….DOWTIN AND WILLIAMS CUT LOOSE!!!!

Junior Nick Williams, who has bounced around between linebacker and safety, as well as inside linebacker Junior Marcus Dowtin, have been granted unconditional releases from their scholarships to transfer to other schools.  Williams has been unhappy for a while regarding his changing positions, at which neither was he very successful, and made his coaches aware of it.  Dowtin’s reason for leaving is a no brainer, although Claude Felton did not elaborate.  Turns out we had twelve (12) players arrested regarding the 2010 season, not eleven as previously thought.

Dowtin had been arrested in Maryland for second-degree assault last May, and the case was not resolved until December.  The kicker is that CMR, you know the guy who has been so wrapped up in Administrative duties and off the field issues dealing with the players that he has been unable to effectively coach football, didn’t have a clue about Marcus’ indiscretion until last week.  I sure am glad that we have a coach that knows what is going on with his players, aren’t you?  So, I am sure that the suggestion was made to Marcus that now might be a good time to “get the hell out of Dodge,” since apparently Athens now has a new zero tolerance position against this off the field ‘B.S.’   (source: AJC.com)

The good news is that finally we may get to the point where we are no longer known as “THE UNIVERSITY OF FELONS.”  The bad news is that for the most part we are going to be looking at a bunch of true freshmen playing “D” in 2011.  Did I tell you about the rumor I read a couple of days ago that the Cowboys (Dallas) want Todd Grantham back??  Not a joke.  I don’t know how much truth there is to it at this point, but some times, where there is smoke there is fire.

More good news, as the world turns, is that RB Isaiah Crowell, Carver High-Columbus, GA, that originally said he had his favorite schools narrowed down to Alabama and Georgia,  has now added Auburn to the mix making it a final three instead of a final two, as he prepares for his official visits.  After Alabama got a verbal commitment from RB Dee Hart, who decommitted from Michigan, it looked great for the Dawgs snagging Crowell, because he would have to fight for playing time with three other very good backs at ‘Bama,’ whereby he could probably start and be the ‘work horse’ for Georgia.  (source: bleacherreport.com)

But now Crowell has included the National Champions as a possibility, with only Dyer with whom to split playing time.  Additionally, Auburn is only 45 minutes from his home in Columbus, and he could be closer to Mommy and Daddy.  As much as I hope that I am wrong, and as much as we need Crowell in Athens, if had I had to bet money, I would say Auburn will get him.  Let’s face it, if you are an 18 year old kid, and you have a choice between going to play for a team that just won the National Championship versus a program that has steadily been declining for three years and just experienced a losing season; lost its lower tier bowl game in an ‘ugly’ fashion; and will probably lose its entire coaching staff after only one year; who would you want to go play for?  Yeah, that’s what I thought you’d say!
