More good news for the 2011 ‘D’, Brandon Boykin and Cordy Glenn have announced their decision to return for their senior year and forego the NFL draft this year. They follow Trinton Sturdivant who made the same announcement last week. The last piece of the puzzle that could be a real shot to the arm, with the talented freshmen coming in, would be for Justin Houston, our top tackler, to make the same decision. With a year of the new 3-4 under their belts, these rising seniors could really make the difference in having a rejuvenated defense. Maybe ‘rejuvenated’ is the wrong word. That indicates that we recently had one that went flat. Fact is we haven’t had a defense at all since Brian Van Gorder left. That was so long ago that I probably should have said “could really make the difference in having a defense for once.” Anyway, this is positive news. Now if we could just get Cecil Newton to represent Justin in negotiating the ‘terms’ of his return for his senior year, everything would be hunky dorrie. (source: Macon.com)
Our new strength and conditioning coach, Joe Tereshinski, is hard at work, pulling in the ‘big guns’ to help whip our ‘wimpy’ players, who have been limping into the fourth quarter every game this past year, into shape for the 2011 season. Former Georgia running back Thomas Brown, who played for the Dawgs from 2004-07, was officially hired yesterday as an assistant strength coach. He starts today. Georgia’s power index record is still held by Brown. Vince Dooley’s former strength coach, John Kasay, is now also onboard as an assistant strength coach. Additionally, former Dawg players, Tony Gilbert and Kendrell Bell will return as student assistants and work in the weight room and help ‘mentor’ the players. From 2003-09, Gilbert was a linebacker with the Jaguars and Falcons, and Bell played linebacker for the Steelers and Chiefs from 2001-07.
Coach Joe T. said with regard to bringing these former players onboard, “Brown, Gilbert and Bell have tremendous respect for Georgia football. They know what it takes and what Georgia football is. It’s their passion, it’s their heart. They also know what it takes to play in the NFL, having been through the combine.” Additionally Coach Joe T. they know what it’s like to win, and they need to “beat this into these players!” Figuratively of course, I think that is what is referred to as “mentoring.” (source: dogbytesonline – Athens Banner Herald)
