Well our hope that Justin Houston, our best tackler, would join other juniors, Trinton Sturdivant, Brandon Boykin, and Cordy Glenn in their return for their senior year as Dawgs, got kicked in the butt today. Houston, as expected, announced his decision to “go Pro.” Houston was a first-team All-SEC selection and a finalist for the Butkus Award and Bronko Nagurski Trophy, as well as being named named to the Football Writers Association All-America team.
Houston had 20 sacks, including 10 this past season as an outside linebacker in Georgia’s 3-4 defensive scheme and 7 1/2 sacks last year as an end in the Bulldogs’ 4-3 defense. He was second in the SEC this season in sacks and in tackles behind Auburn’s Nick Fairley. The Dawgs will return eight starters: Boykin, Sanders Commings, Bacarri Rambo, Alec Ogletree, Branden Smith, Cornelius Washington, DeAngelo Tyson and Christian Robinson, but is losing three of its top four tacklers. After watching three (3) quarters of the Falcons play-off game with the Packers this evening, I recognized how similar Atlanta’s defensive play tonight mirrored the Dawgs defensive play since Brian Van Gorder left Athens, missed tackles, missed tackles, missed tackles. Only trouble is, as you know, the Falcons Defensive Coordinator is, well, Brian Van Gorder. What a conundrum! Anyway, Justin, the “Birds” could have used you tonight!
