MARK RICHT, THE MAN: WHY DOES HE HAVE TO BE SUCH A CLASS ACT? DAMN IT!

Just when he gives you all the reasons to turn on him; call for the University to axe him; and tell him that as a head coach he makes a great car mechanic, the guy not only goes out and signs one the best recruiting class’ in the nation, but then he goes and pulls a stunt, just being himself, Mark Richt the man, that makes you like him again. Damn it! And just when I was starting to get comfortable hating the guy!

As reported by the Atlanta Journal Constitution, a young man from Valdosta High School, James Eunice, had been accepted to attend UGA. He had contacted Mark Richt and told him that he wanted to try and walk-on the football team, as it has always been his dream to be a ‘Dawg.’ Three weeks ago, while on a duck hunting trip, the seventeen year old student fell from a boat and drowned.

During James’ funeral, his teammates, Jay Rome and Malcolm Mitchell (two members of Richt’s ‘Dream Team’) got up to speak. Jay read a letter that Mark Richt had prepared and asked to be read to the family. In the letter Mark spoke of his heart break of the loss of such a fine young man at such an early age. At the end of the letter the coach added, “Oh yeah, James made the team.” Then Rome and Mitchell held up an official UGA jersey with Eunice’s last name in addition to the No. 23. The same number he had worn at Valdosta. A tearful crowd stood and applauded.

Richt took the time to make this gesture for the young man’s family when he was in the middle of wrapping up what is easily the most important recruiting class of his career. The one that may very well save his job at UGA. But, it is this kind of thing that comes naturally to Mark Richt, the man. That is why he is so damn likeable. That is why he still is Georgia’s coach today, and more than likely will be for many years to come.

Jay Rome’s comment after the funeral was, “I’m going to play for an incredible man.” Malcolm Mitchell added, “It made me proud to be a Bulldog.”

CMR, you just down right fight dirty for a ‘nice’ guy. You win, I like you again, Mark Richt. But that will only get you as far as the Boise State game. Then the war is on again! Hit me with your best shot, Mr. Nice Guy! Why do you have to be so classy? Damn it!
