The Bulldogs (7-5) are rolling, having won three in a row coming into tonight’s game at home against Winthrop at 7 pm EST. It’s the second three-game winning streak this season for UGA. Standing in the way of the Dawgs pushing it to four in a row are the vistors from Rock Hill, S.C. Meet them.
WINTHROP
Record: 4-8
Coming In: Lost at Presbyterian 75-71 Dec. 20 to end a three-game winning streak
Mascot: The Eagle. Unlike other birds who scatter south as soon as things get chilly up north, the eagle guts it out in cold weather. It only heads to a warmer climate if
there’s too much ice on the water in its normal feeding area, which keeps it from fish. I just moved to Georgia this year to get away from the Midwest cold; nice to know that eagles are tougher than I am. Then again, they didn’t have to drive on icy roads or shovel snow.
Well, This Is Interesting: Georgia’s got to be looking for a break in the schedule. The Dawgs come into tonight’s game with the 39th strongest schedule in Division I. It would be easy to look at Winthrop’s RPI and think, “Hey, night off” and get caught in a trap game …
But Here’s The Thing: … it’s not likely. Georgia has mostly taken care of business against teams with a RPI higher than 100, posting a 6-2 record this season against them.
Watch This Player: Think of Winthrop senior guards Andre Jones and Reggie Middleton as a unified backcourt force. The pair combine for 30.3 points per game, or almost half of Winthrop’s team average. The duo also contributes 5.2 assists and 2.3 steals. Middleton, an Augusta, Ga., native, and Jones have played in a combined 199 games in their Winthrop careers.
