BCS conference moves all over the map
By Editorial Staff
That’s the talk around college football – teams moving from one conference to another in the last two years.
In the near future, we are going to have schools that will join another conference that is not geographically set. One is West Virgina joining the Big 12. Another is Texas A&M joining the SEC. Boise State joining the Big East – you get the picture, right?
The SEC is going to be a little stronger in football because Missouri and Texas A&M will be with them. Missouri didn’t exactly have a great season this year, but the Tigers will get better. Just a few seasons ago, Missouri was in the top 10 in the polls.
Now, Boise State joining the Big East was for one reason – to get in the BCS Bowl if they win all their games. When the Broncos were in the WAC, they didn’t get a quality schedule. If Boise State does play well in the Big East, it will be part of the BCS conversation. The Big East is a basketball power, but even though Boise State has won 19 or more games in three of the past four seasons, this move wasn’t done for that sport. Look at why the Big 10 got Nebraska this past season; it was a good move for football, not basketball. Nebraska is a powerhouse in college football, but a doormat in basketball.
Notre Dame has been courted by the Big 10 for some time. Notre Dame in some ways does not want to join a conference because they could lose their tv rights; NBC has been televising Notre Dame’s home games since 1991. The Big 10 wants Notre Dame because it can attract more audiences. TCU is going to be in the Big 12, which is actually a good move. The Horned Frogs are a competitive football team. Last year, they went to the Rose Bowl and edged Wisconsin.
In the ACC, Syracuse and Pitt will be joining that conference in 2013. Pitt and Syracuse have a good basketball programs, and the ACC has been known for basketball for some time. To me, it isn’t a good move geographically. The ACC is Atlantic Coast Conference; Pitt and Syracuse are not even close to the Atlantic Ocean.
Tell me what you think of the powerhouse conferences that are on a move. It will take some time to get used to these schools playing in a different conferences that we are use to seeing.
