The Georgia men’s basketball team has one last non-conference dance before SEC play starts Jan. 7 against Alabama in Athens. The Bulldogs take on Delaware State at 2 p.m. today at home. Time to meet the visitors.
DELAWARE STATE
Record: 4-6
Coming In: Has lost three in a row after falling to Tennessee State 59-55 Dec. 17 at home.
Mascot: The hornet. It’s the eternal question – which is most dangerous: the bee, the hornet or the wasp? Well, the hornet and the wasp get the early nod because, unlike the bee, they can sting multiple times. The wasp has a more painful sting according to this chart, but in terms of venom, all of them bow to the harvester ant. According to the latter article, a North American species has the most lethal arthropod venom. Sounds like a pretty nasty animal to have a mascot. However, the Delaware State Harvester Ants doesn’t really have a ring to it.
Well, This Is Interesting: Delaware State certainly isn’t afraid of facing teams from “major” conferences. The Hornets, who play in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, have already played Georgia Tech and Notre Dame and still have George Washington and North Carolina State by the end of next week.
But Here’s The Thing: The Hornets haven’t fared well against that heightened competition so far, losing by an average of 21 points.
Watch This Player: Since leading scorer Tahj Tate was suspended indefinitely in early December, Casey Walker has become the top scoring gun for the Hornets. He’s averaged 16.2 points per contest in Delaware State’s last five games and leads the team in 3-pointers made this season (20).
