Georgia Finishes Second In SEC All-Sports Competition

The University of Georgia finished in second place in the annual Southeastern Conference all-sports competition sponsored by the Halifax Media Group.

Georgia’s second place overall standing among the 14 league schools was achieved by finishing third in the men’s and fourth in the women’s annual all-sports conference competition. Consistently high finishes in most men’s and women’s sports boosted the Bulldogs into the second place overall standings. In the last 13 years, Georgia has posted one first place finish to go with nine second place finishes, two thirds, and one fifth in the all-sports competition.

Georgia’s SEC highlights for the 2012-13 year include an SEC Eastern Division championship in football; SEC titles in women’s swimming and diving, women’s tennis and men’s tennis.

The Halifax Media Group, which owns 31 newspapers throughout the United States, awards the overall, men’s and women’s SEC All-Sports trophies. A program’s points total was divided by the total number of teams competing in the sports the school fields and that quotient ranks the teams in the final standings. The sports of cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field are combined. A program’s outdoor track finish makes up half, while the remaining two quarters are based on the cross country and indoor finishes.

This is the second year for the Halifax Media Group to award the SEC All-Sports Trophy. The New York Times Regional Newspaper Group gave the awards from the 1994-95 through the 2010-11 seasons. Prior to that, the league tabulated the SEC All-Sports totals.
