Georgia Football: Bulldogs Return To Work After A Sunday Break

Fifth-ranked Georgia had a kicking scrimmage for an hour and a half at Sanford Stadium late Monday afternoon after having an off-day on Sunday.
“I thought we had a solid day in the kicking scrimmage,” said Georgia head coach Mark Richt. “It was organized and the guys hustled. This is always a big day for the kickers, but it also big for our runners, the guys who are the protectors, who are catching and running the ball and doing various other duties.”
Following practice, the Bulldogs enjoyed their annual watermelon cutting. This traditionally marks the end of the preseason camp.
“We were excited about getting the watermelon for another year,” Georgia head coach Mark Richt said. “Normally we have it at the conclusion of camp right before classes start. But the weather pushed us back this year. The Coggin family was kind enough to come back again today and we appreciate them making the effort of us.”
The Bulldogs were scheduled to have Monday’s practice and the watermelon on Saturday morning, but Richt surprised the players with a trip to the Gabrielsen Natatorium to jump off the 10-meter platform and swim in the pool.
Monday also marked the first day of classes in the fall semester. While the players will have meetings and will lift on Tuesday, they will get a day off from practice on Tuesday as their classes crank up.
“We asked our academic staff which day would be best to be off and they thought the second day of classes would help the guys the most,” Richt said. “It was important for us to try and get the guys moving in the right direction at the beginning of the semester.
One of the ongoing competitions on special teams is between redshirt sophomore Nathan Theus and freshman Trent Frix at snapper. Frix’s older brother, Ty, snapped for the Bulldogs from 2009-12. Theus’ younger brother, John, started on the offensive line for Georgia last season.
“They are both doing a good job,” said Richt. “Competing for this job has brought the best out in both of them.”
The annual Fans Picture Day will be held Saturday in the Reed Plaza area of Sanford Stadium. Georgia football players will be on hand for photos and autographs from 3-5 p.m. between Gates 2 and 4. Richt will also be available from 3-5 p.m. for those with ticket coupons.
