Georgia Football: Gurley Wants Bigger Role

The fifth-ranked Georgia football team held a 90-minute practice in full pads on Monday as preparations continued for the 2013 season opener.

“It was a long day with school, weightlifting, meetings and practice, and I thought the guys really fought through it,” coach Mark Richt said. “I thought they really did a great job. Tomorrow, we’ll do a lot of scout work. And on Wednesday, we’ll have our practice game. It’s no longer Georgia vs. Georgia. It’s Georgia vs. Clemson the rest of the way.”

Wednesday’s “practice game” will be a full-scale scrimmage with reserves and scout team players taking on the roles of the Clemson players.

A year ago, tailback Todd Gurley earned Freshman All-America honors as he rushed for 1,385 yards (the sixth-best figure in school history) and 17 touchdowns. He said on Monday he would like to be an even bigger force in the offense by becoming a more complete receiver.

“That’s been one of the main focuses,” said Gurley, who hauled in 16 passes a year ago. “(Quarterback Aaron) Murray’s been telling me he wants to get me the ball more. I’ve been trying to get out quicker and get into my route so I’ll be able to make a play.”
