This week we want to know – which major UGA athletic program will win the school’s next national championship?
The choices, which involve what would be considered programs that can generate revenue for the athletic departments, are football, baseball, men’s basketball and women’s basketball. We know all Dawg fans are proud as can be of the golf, gymnastics, volleyball, softball, swimming & diving, track & field program, and all the other teams Georgia fields – and they’re all important in the big picture.
But this is about the big squads. The teams that national audiences will tune in to watch. The ones that become the yardstick for athletics programs to measure themselves against the rest of the conference and country.
To recap, here’s when each of these programs won (if ever) their last national championship.
UGA head coach Vince Dooley is carried off the field after beating Notre Dame to win the 1980 National Championship
Football – 1980
Baseball – 1990 (Lost championship 2008)
Men’s Basketball – None (Last Final Four in 1983)
Women’s Basketball – None (Last Final Four in 1999)
So yeah…it’s been a while since any of Georgia’s big four programs have tasted the sweet wine of success in the form of a national championship.
So who will be next?
Is Jeremy Pruitt the key to unlocking what’s been holding back the ultra-talented football team for years now?
Are the Hoops Dawgs back on track finally, and rebuilding into a regular contender in the SEC again?
Can the Diamond Dawgs rebuild and get back to making regular appearances in the NCAA tournament, and a run at the title?
Is Andy Landers ever going to finally break through and get that elusive, but much-deserved, national title?
Vote below, and then add your comments in the comment section and let’s get this discussion started.
We want a championship, so who will it be?
