Summer Georgia Bulldogs Baseball In Final Weeks

Georgia Bulldogs baseball continues around the country for the UGA boys of summer.

In the Coastal Plain League (CPL), rising senior Jared Cheek is 5-2 with a 3.33 ERA in eight starts for the Gastonia (N.C.) Grizzlies. He has pitched 48.2 innings and has a league-best 59 strikeouts. Also, Cheek started the All-Star game for the Western Division. Elsewhere in the CPL, rising sophomore Bulldog Mike Bell is batting .216-3-13 with eight stolen bases for the Columbia (S.C.) Blowfish.

In the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL), rising junior David Sosebee has fought through a lack of run support, going 0-4 with a 2.27 ERA. In four starts, he has 22 strikeouts and four walks in 27.2 innings pitched. Rising sophomore pitcher Mike Mancuso is 1-0 with a 2.28 ERA in four starts for the Newport Gulls. He has 16 strikeouts and five walks in 19.2 innings pitched.

Rising junior outfielder DJ Smith started the All-Star game in the Great Lakes League this past weekend. He is a member of the league-leading Lima (Ohio) Locos and batting .285-0-18 with 10 stolen bases in 33 games.

In the Northwoods League, rising junior catcher Zack Bowers is batting .267-4-20 in 35 games for the Lakeshore (Wis.) Chinooks. Fellow teammate and rising sophomore Connor Jones has been an excellent reliever, registering a 4-0 mark, 1.87 ERA and two saves in 14 appearances covering 24 innings.

In the New York Collegiate League, rising senior Taylor Hicks is a team-best 5-1 with a 2.31 ERA in seven starts for the Oneonta Outlaws. Fellow teammate and rising junior Austin Wallace is 2-1 with a 3.97 ERA in seven starts.

In the California Collegiate League, rising junior David Gonzalez is 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA in nine appearances spanning 30 innings for the San Luis Obispo Blues.

In the Valley League, rising junior first baseman Daniel Nichols is leading the Harrisonburg (Va.) Turks toward another pennant. In his last six games, he is batting .409 (9-for-22) with four RBI. For the summer, he is hitting .341.

In the Sunbelt Baseball League, rising sophomore pitcher Drew Moody is 0-1 with a 2.89 ERA in five appearances with the Windward Braves. In 18.2 innings, Moody has just four walks with 20 strikeouts.

Rising sophomore Stephen Wrenn is the lone Bulldog remaining in the Cape Cod Baseball League after rising senior Hunter Cole to turned professional last week. Wrenn is batting .200 with five RBI and three stolen bases in 27 games for the Bourne Braves.

  • Cole became the third Bulldog to begin his professional career this summer, joining shortstop Nelson Ward and pitcher Jarrett Brown. Ward and Brown signed with Seattle then assigned to the Pulaski (Va.) Mariners in the Appalachian League. Ward hit .350-1-8 in his first 11 games and before promotion to Everett (Wash.) in the Class A Short Season Northwest League. Brown has nine relief appearances and pitched 10.1 innings pitched with a 1-1 mark and 1 save.

    Cole was leading the CCBL with 25 RBI in 25 games for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox when San Francisco signed him to a professional contract. Cole, who ranked fifth in the CCBL with a .353 average and four home runs, was a 26th-round draft pick of the Giants this past June. The signing deadline for upperclassmen was July 18th. He will report to one of their minor league affiliates in either Arizona or Oregon this week.

    Returning Bulldog Baseball players return to campus Monday, Aug. 18 for the start of fall semester.
