Coaches All-SEC team announced: UGA linebackers Floyd, Herrera ignored
By Brad Hodnett
Thursday, the SEC released the annual Coaches preseason All-SEC team. As a fan, I’ve learned over time to not pay as much attention to these lists as I used to.

Maybe when head coaches had the ability to sit down and actually take the time to choose one of these lists themselves, I trusted a little bit more. Now, most of us know that, an Associate Athletic Director or some other person in the administration is most likely the person scribbling down a few names to appease the media.
The SEC West dominates the list, with 19 of the 26 first team coming from the Western Division of the conference. Over the first to third teams, the Georgia Bulldogs placed 8 players on the list.
The coaches list includes one Dawg from each phase of the game, offense, defense and special teams. Todd Gurley is no surprise as a first team running back and neither are Ramik Wilson at linebacker or Marshall Morgan placekicking, after a bounce back year from an inconsistent frosh campaign.
On the second team, the Dawgs place an offensive player in John Theus, who is in a tie with two other offensive linemen on the team. Even after what some fans feel was a disappointing junior season, cornerback Damian Swann was chosen by the coaches on the second team. With the simplified defense of Jeremy Pruitt, Dawg fans are hoping that the secondary can act more as a unit and will let Swann show more of the promise of his sophomore campaign.
Lastly, even after a devastating knee injury suffered in the Tennessee game, Keith Marshall was named to the coaches third team. If he can regain his form and stay healthy, he will be an important cog in Mike Bobo’s offense. The junior’s attention to blocking on passing downs may prove essential to help quarterback Hutson Mason‘s transition to a full time starter.

In the blogger’s department of “How could you miss this guy?”, I have been on the Amarlo Herrera bandwagon for the entire preseason. The senior middle linebacker has a ton of tackles and makes all the calls for the defense. As many times as he had to tell Georgia’s young defensive backfield what to do, I’m surprised he ever got to see the ball snapped.
I have a strange feeling we may see him on some of the postseason lists. Also landing in that department is super sophomore, Leonard Floyd. All the guy did was make big and game changing type plays last season. Heck, he is a Phil Steele third team All-American selection. Like Herrera, I think you may see him on the coaches post season squad.
