Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Alex Wood tied his career-high of 12 strikeouts against the Miami Marlins in a 1-0 shutout victory Sunday afternoon. Wood’s win was not an easy task with the fifth worst run support in the National League. Of course, he may consider himself lucky since the Braves were no-hit the next day.
Chris Kirk won the Deutsche Bank Championship Monday. He previously won McGladrey Classic last November, and is considered a contender for the last Ryder Cup spot.
Quarterback Aaron Murray made the 53-man roster for the Kansas City Chiefs. He will play behind Alex Smith, the Chiefs signed to a 5-year deal on Sunday, and former Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel. The Chiefs placed previous third-string quarterback Tyler Bray on IR.
Angel Robinson finished her first year with the WNBA’s Seattle Storm. Despite not making the playoffs, the team was impressed with Robinson. Robinson has spent the last two years playing in Spain. And yes, she did get to a football game.
Houston Astros reliever Josh Fields pitched a scoreless ninth inning Tuesday night in the debut of midseason manager replacement, Tom Lawless. The Astros fired manager Bo Porter and bench coach Dave Trembly Monday. Fields has 68 strikeouts in 53.1 innings. Former Bulldog teammate Gordon Beckham had a hit and scored a run in the 6th inning of the same game.
Speaking of which, Beckham was traded to the Anaheim Angels by the Chicago White Sox last month. He will have to have a stellar September to prove to the Angels that he belongs as part of their infield. For now, he is playing third base for Anaheim, but he is having his worst season at the plate with a .225 average (career average of .245 in his six years in the majors) this year. Maybe the sunny scenery of Southern California can help?
Cubs relief pitcher Justin Grimm made headlines by striking out four batters in an inning. That’s right. Grimm struck out the leadoff batter, and then Daniel Descalso reached on a wild pitch after his strikeout. This is the 72nd time this has been done in the majors, the last time by Zack Greinke of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Grimm has a 3.82 ERA with 63 strikeouts over 61.1 innings this year.
Former Dawgs tight end Arthur Lynch couldn’t overcome a lingering back injury, and was placed on IR by the Miami Dolphins. He was their fifth-round draft pick.
Even though they aren’t on the field, Georgia is well represented on the television with SEC Network and ESPN broadcasters David Pollack, Maria Taylor, Matt Stinchcomb, David Greene and D.J. Shockley.
And the not so good…John Isner lost to P. Kohlschreiber in the third round of the U.S. Open on Saturday.
Champ Bailey was cut by the New Orleans Saints. He was cut from the Denver Broncos after the Super Bowl earlier this year. His 12 Pro-Bowl appearances leads all NFL cornerbacks, but he has never won a Super Bowl.
Other Bulldogs who did not make NFL rosters: Garrison Smith (Miami Dolphins), Orson Charles (Cincinnati Bengals), Dennis Roland (Chicago Bears), Kris Durham (Detroit Lions), Tavarres King (Carolina Panthers). Any of these guys would make great additions to practice squads, and maybe even a roster or two.
