Georgia Football: Will Mark Richt use two QBs against Vanderbilt?

When it comes to a football coach like Georgia’s Mark Richt, sometimes you get more out of what he doesn’t say than what he says.

With the ongoing struggles of the passing game and senior quarterback Hutson Mason, the questions were inevitably raised at this week’s pre-Vanderbilt media day about whether or not we might see backup QB Brice Ramsey used in some way.

The answers were fraught with unspoken speculation.

When asked if he planed to play Ramsey at all this week:

"“A plan to? I don’t know. …“We’re just practicing everybody like usual, and we’ll figure that out Thursday night when we talk.”"

And then when asked if a two-quarterback system might be employed at some point:

"“I’ve done it over the years. I was used to doing it at Florida State. Then when I got here, we did it with Shock because that’s kind of what I was used to doing. Then over time, I don’t think Mike felt quite as strong about it. So we kind of got away from it. But it’s not a bad thing to do.”"

So, there was a definite refusal to deny any commitment of uncertainty there.

The truth of the matter is, a two-QB system might be exactly what Georgia needs, whether its Brice Ramsey, who has a much stronger deep arm than does Mason, or Faton Bauta, who has size and strength to run the ball and line up in some different formations.

Of course there is no way Richt is going to tip his hand as to the plan, but it’s clear through those quotes that nothing is out of the question.

Meanwhile, Mason is obviously feeling the pressure and doesn’t want to be the guy to let his team down in a possible SEC and National Championship campaign.

“I think these first four games I’ve just put too much on my shoulders as far as trying to get everything right, trying to be perfect and trying to please everybody,” Mason told DogBytesOnline’s Mark Weiszer on Tuesday. “I think that’s going to change, my mindset. I made that up yesterday after having a good talk with coach Bobo. I’ve got to let it rip.”

With his two top wide receiver back in action on Saturday, Mason may have the actual opportunity to let it rip for a change.
