DaQuan Hawkins, defensive tackle – Atlanta, Ga.
When you think of defensive linemen in this year’s Georgia recruiting class, automatically Trenton Thompson comes to mind, but don’t look past this 3-star tackle from Westlake High School.
Hawkins is a raw product but an athletic one, and at 6’4 and 285 pounds, he’s got size for the line as well as a nose for the ball coupled with excellent tackling skills. He’s got nowhere near the ceiling of a player like Thompson, but as an interior linemen he’ll be a project for Jeremy Pruitt’s staff to work with on technique and pass rushing.
When the Bulldogs beef up for run-stop plays, Hawkins’ size and sideline-to-sideline ability may be utilized, and he’ll find a home rotating on the line for at least one year. He’s also an excellent heads-up lineman who can use his length and height to knock down passes.
Eventually he could work into a starting position eventually, as he’ll have to work on hand technique and add some muscle, but he’s already being compared to Ray Drew in terms of what he could mature into.
