Jim Donnan (Football) and Tubby Smith (Basketball) – 1996-1997
Tubby Smith is one of the all time great college basketball coaches there is, and Jim Donnan once had a solid reputation as not only a great coach and recruiter, but a keen football intelligence.
Smith was at Georgia for only two seasons, leading the Bulldogs to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances for the second time in school history, making it to the Sweet 16 in 1996 and losing in the first round in 1997.
Donnan took over after the disaster that was the Ray Goff era in Georgia football, and was head football coach from 1996-2000. While left with few top line players on the field, and a program just coming off NCAA sanctions, Donnan got the Bulldogs back on a winning track, although his record against Georgia’s primary rivals (Florida, Auburn, Georgia Tech and Tennessee) were ultimately what sank him.
