Wally Butts (Football) and Elmer A. Lampe (Basketball) – 1939-1946

While Wally Butts name is one of the most recognizable to longtime Georgia fans, his counterpart on the hardwood didn’t gain quite as much attention.

Butts was one of the most successful football coaches in program history, compiling a 140-86-9 overall record, bringing home four conference championships and one national title. His Georgia teams were among the toughest to ever play in Athens, and they got that reputation from their coach.

As for Lampe, his overall 79-81 record doesn’t look impressive, but during a period when Georgia simply didn’t really compete in basketball, he still managed a second and two third place finishes in the SEC.

Had Lampe been able to lift the cagers to a more respectable level, this duo would be near the top of the list for sure.
