  • The drought of running backs not being selected in the first round of the NFL Draft is over, as Georgia’s Todd Gurley was taken 10th overall by the St. Louis Rams. The overall thought was that the Rams would go with an offensive player for their pick, whether it was a running back, wide receiver or offensive linemen.

Gurley was moved to tears in his post-selection interview with ESPN’s Suzy Kolber, and rightfully so. It’s been a long journey for the Bulldog standout, and the Rams are an excellent fit for his skills.

St. Louis hasn’t had a bruising, speedy back of Gurley’s caliber since the early days of Steven Jackson, the franchise’s all-time rushing leader.

Despite recovering from ACL surgery in November, the Rams (and head coach Jeff Fisher) felt that Gurley was simply too good to pass up. Many felt Gurley might fall to late in the first round, but instead he broke the running back draft curse in grand fashion.

The Rams will benefit immediately from Gurley’s presence on the field, as they have been stellar on defense in recent seasons but trip over their own chalk lines on offense.
