8: Buck Belue

With a name like Buck Belue – he’s got to be a quarterback.

At quarterback, Buck Belue led Georgia to the 1980 National Championship. He also led Georgia’s spectacular last minute drive to beat Georgia Tech in in 1978 in Athens.

While his passing and running talents were considerable and his leadership superb, he is best remembered for pitching the ball back to Herschel Walker. As the legend goes, then Head Coach Vince Dooley sat down with Buck after Hershel’s debut against Tennessee in 1980 to inform him that someone was going to be pitching the ball back to Herschel, not pitching it down the field, and it could be him or someone else. Buck responded by being the finest toss sweep quarterback in history, holding his passing skills in reserve until absolutely necessary
