Georgia seniors Malcolm Mitchell and Jordan Jenkins are on the watch list for the Wuerffel Trophy, which is known as college football’s premier award for community service. Georgia is one of only six schools with more than one player on the 78 man list.

Mitchell is last years third-leading Bulldog receiver with 31 catches for 248 yards and three touchdowns while playing in nine games. Mitchell, who sustained a season-ending knee injury in the 2013 opener, had 85 catches for 1,237 yards and eight touchdowns during his first two seasons in 2011-12.

Jenkins is the Georgia football squad’s top returning tackler with 70 stops from the outside linebacker position in 2014. He finished with 9.5 tackles for loss and five sacks to go along and a team-high 24 quarterback pressures. In addition, Jenkins forced two and and recovered two fumbles last season.

Jenkins is also on the watch lists for the Bednarik Award, the Nagurski Trophy, the Butkus Award and the Lombardi Award during this preseason.

Mitchell became a super-star reading proponent after his own reading struggles and triumphs gained national attention. Mitchell has doubled down on his effort to encourage reading by writing a children’s book, The Magician’s Hat, about a magician whose magic comes from books.

The Wuerffel Trophy, known as “College Football’s Premier Award for Community Service,” is presented annually by the All Sports Association in Fort Walton Beach Florida. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel from the University of Florida, the Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.
