2002 SEC Championship Game: The Road is long

More from Dawn of the Dawg

In 1980, Penn Wagers called his first college football game.

In 1982 Georgia won an SEC Championship.

Penn Wagers’ rise from rec league in 1974 to Division 2 college football in 1980 was meteoric.

Georgia’s 20 years between SEC Championships passed at glacier speed.

With Penn Wagers managing the proceedings, the Dawgs stepped on the Southeastern Conference Big Stage for the first time ever and whipped Arkansas for the 2002 SEC Crown in the Georgia Dome. It is one of the greatest moments in Georgia football.

Following the lead of Mark Richt’s aggressive early game calls, the Bulldogs pounced on Arkansas and kept their foot on the gas for 60 minutes. It wasn’t close and it was glorious.

The names of the 2002 Bulldog heroes will remain on the lips of the Georgia Faithful for ever – Boss Bailey, Tony Gilbert, Billy Bennett , Terrence Edwards, David Greene, Burt Jones, David Pollack, Musa Smith, Jon Stinchcomb, and Johnathan Sullivan are only a few.

The Bulldogs finished the season ranked sixth nationally, and no one thought about Penn Wagers.
