In 1964 Vince Dooley arrived at Georgia intent on reversing the course of Georgia football. Alabama served as Georgia ‘s season opening foe, led by no less than Joe Namath, in Tuscaloosa. Bear Bryant’s Tide sent Vince Dooley back to the drawing board after a humiliating game one loss.

Good work was done at the drawing board the second time around and one year later, Georgia football burst onto the national stage with a heart stopping season opening last-minute win against Alabama.
Not only did the Dawgs defeat Bama and the Bear, they did so on national TV, the only TV game of the day, on a spectacular trick play.
Vince Dooley, offensively conservative, made a reputation for himself as a fierce competitor by going for a two-point conversion to win or lose. The decision was the right one, as Kirby Moore hit Pat Hodgson in the end zone for the winning points, Georgia won, and the rest is, as they say , history.
