Georgia Golf Places Fourth in Collegiate Cup Challenge

The Georgia golf squad continues to mirror the success of the Bulldog golf alumni, finishing fourth in the Collegiate Challenge.

The No. 12-ranked Georgia men’s golf team placed fourth in the stroke-play portion of the DICK’S Sporting Goods Collegiate Challenge Cup in September.

SEC counterparts Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee and Vanderbilt joined Georgia, while Clemson, Duke, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Louisville and Virginia represented the ACC.

The Bulldogs fired a final-round 4-over 288 at the Golf Club of Tennessee to land at 8-over 860. Vanderbilt took top honors at 3-under 849, topping Virginia in a sudden-death playoff.

Junior Greyson Sigg paced the Bulldogs on day two with an even-par 71. Junior Jaime Lopez Rivarola and sophomore Zach Healy added 1-over 72s and senior Sepp Straka signed for a 2-over 73. Senior Lee McCoy had the Bulldogs’ non-counting score of 5-over 76.

Healy finished 16th at 2-over 215, 10 shots in back of Alabama’s Robby Shelton (8-under 205). McCoy followed at 3-over 216, while Sigg came in at 4-over 217, Straka wound up at 5-over 218 and Lopez Rivarola had a 12-over 225.

During the Sunday finale, the six SEC and six ACC squads squared off in match-play competition for conference honors.

Georgia faced Florida State with Lee McCoy winning his match and Jaime Lopez Rivarola squaring his as Georgia went 1-3-1 against the Seminoles. The ACC nipped the SEC 15.5-14.5 to retain the Challenge Cup. The ACC leads the series with the SEC 2-1.

McCoy disptached FSU’s Hank Lebioda 2&1. The match was all square through 12 holes, but McCoy won Nos. 13 and 14 and never relinquished his lead. Lopez Rivarola lost the first four holes to Cristobal Del Solar, yet chipped away and eventually won Nos. 15, 17 and 18 to finish all square.

In Georgia’s other matches, Sepp Straka fell 2&1 to Harry Ellis, Zach Healy lost to Bennett Baker 2-up, and Greyson Sigg dropped a 2-up decision to Jack Maguire.

Duke topped Kentucky 3-2, Vanderbilt beat Virginia 3-2, Tennessee dispatched Clemson 3-2, Louisville knocked off Alabama 3-2 and Florida edged Georgia Tech 2-1-2.
