Transition

When Bobo accepted the head-coaching job at Colorado State, some fans were concerned, some said good riddance. When he took Will Friend, the Georgia offensive line coach with him, to serve as offensive coordinator, it barely made news.

a terribly simple case of poor coaching transition

But it’s news when the pupil beats the teacher, and that may be what Bobo did.

Coach Richt went the way of the established offensive coordinator to replace Bobo and hired Brian Schottenheimer. Schottenheimer has been judged harshly this year, but the spotlight on Schottenheimer may be diverting attention from the real problem.

New offensive line coach Rob Sale also arrived with Schottenheimer. Word on the street is Sale prefers a different style of line play than Friend, and with it, a different style of player.

While the under-performance of the offensive line has much to do with Georgia’s tailback issues, the offensive line’s performance may also be a  simple case of poor coaching transition. Include in  the transition equation the effect of Coach McClendon moving from running back coach to coach wide receiver coach and the addition of Thomas Brown at running back coach along with Schottenheimer and Sale, the product is the worst coaching transition at Georgia since before the Vince Dooley Era.
