Georgia Football: Back To Form?

Was the Kentucky game a sign for a strong finish from the Georgia football team ahead of their matchup against Auburn?

Terry Godwin takes the snap. Play-action pass, and the ball is loose. He picks it up. He has some room. He takes it into the end zone for a touchdown!

Wait, a touchdown?

Yes, a touchdown.

Mr. Godwin will never forget that touchdown not only considering it was his first career collegiate score but also because he broke the Dawgs scoring drought streak. The Dawgs scored three (count em’) six-pointers in the game.

Godwin and fellow speedster Sony Michel finally took the offense into their own hands, something UGA has been looking for since Nick Chubb went down for the season in early October.

The defense, on the other hand, continued to dominant and make defensive coordinator and head honcho of the rumor mill Jeremy Pruitt happy. Without giving the Kentucky offense (or team for that matter) too much credit, the Bulldogs looked great on both sides of the ball.

Can the Athens-faithful expect more of the same with three average opponents left on the schedule?

The crazy thing about this weekend’s matchup in Auburn is the fact that throughout the season this game has been viewed in every possible way. Prior to the season, this game was to feature the top team in the SEC east vs. the front-runner from the west. Regardless of the outcome, they were to play again in Atlanta some three weeks later.

By late September, this game was viewed as a game the Dawgs would barely bat an eyelash at. After taking care of Florida (another easy victory), Georgia would trounce Auburn and move briskly into the national spotlight.

Fast-forward one month to late October, and this game became the Toilet Bowl, usually played against Vanderbilt and Kentucky. Does the national audience have to watch quarterbacks this bad?

Wake up because now it is mid-November. The leaves have fallen, and the cool autumn air is quietly turning into a 40-degree chill. The night grows dark just before 6 PM, and the smell of winter is upon us all.

Status check: Auburn is coming off a convincing road victory over No. 19 Texas A&M that saw pre-season Heisman Trophy winner Jeremy Johnson finally play up to his potential.

Georgia is fresh off a dismantling of Kentucky (still counts) where the offense got some sort of rhythm back, and the defense continued to play at a high level.

This game, right now at this point in the year, is against two teams that are in the exact same place. They have both had high expectations dashed by unimpressive play on the field. Now, they are looking to string some resemblance of hope back into their programs.

Here’s another fun and interesting fun to add to the game: a noon kickoff on the east coach means an 11 AM boot in Auburn, Alabama.

The Dawgs will need to wake up early and come out aggressive in this always-intense rivalry game. Two wins in a row would be…well nothing too special. But, hey it is still something.
